From OHC
June 12, 2023

In a profession that epitomizes compassion, care, and dedication, exceptional individuals often stand out for their extraordinary contributions. Today, we are thrilled to announce that OHC Fairfield’s Jennifer “Jen” Byrd, RN, has been honored with the highly prestigious OHC DAISY Award, recognizing her extraordinary dedication and compassionate care.
Jennifer was nominated by Kara Bishop, a patient of OHC medical oncologist and hematologist, Prasad R. Kudalkar, MD, and radiation oncologist, Elizabeth H. Levick, MD.
Kara shared the following statement, “During my visits to OHC for chemotherapy, every nurse working there was proficient, assuring, pleasant, and well-accustomed to caring for a diverse population. One nurse who personally affected me the most was Jennifer Byrd. I suffered a frightening allergic reaction to one of my chemo drugs, but she was right on it. She caught it right away and responded accordingly.
“Besides being knowledgeable and proficient with her experienced nursing skills, she really provided emotional support to help me carry on with my treatments. It was always reassuring for me to see her every time I came in. She took time to remind me of my patient rights and I really felt she was a patient advocate. Sometimes I would request for her to be my nurse. Even if she wasn’t able to, she still kept an eye on me. I could tell she genuinely cared about me.

“When Jennifer was my nurse, she would run my meds slower in caution. I am an observer and have worked in the medical field. I have seen Jennifer and all the nurses use the sterile technique correctly and always verify patient IDs before hanging IVs or administering meds. They know all the patients by name and remember their habits and preferences. Jennifer and her co-workers transitioned well to accommodate the other patients during stressful times. I am so grateful for her care during this difficult time of illness for me.”
The DAISY Award not only recognizes the outstanding work of Jennifer, but it also serves as a testament to the entire nursing profession. Nurses like her inspire us all, reminding us of the immense impact that a single individual can have on the lives of patients and their families.
“Jennifer exemplifies the core values that define the nursing profession. We are so fortunate to have such a wonderful person working with us at OHC,” added Dr. Kudalkar.
As we celebrate Jennifer’s remarkable achievement, we extend our heartfelt congratulations and gratitude for her outstanding contributions. We are privileged to have Nurse Jen as part of our healthcare family, and we look forward to witnessing her continued success and the positive impact she will undoubtedly make in the lives of countless others.
