Paula F. Weisenberger, who retired from OHC earlier this month
It has been a bittersweet time at OHC as our beloved Dr. Paula Weisenberger retired earlier this month after 41 years of oncology practice. Dr. Paula, as she was lovingly known by thousands, is a legacy in cancer care—a pillar in the medical community who dedicated her life to serving patients with unwavering intent.
Dr. Paula, a “Hamiltonian” at heart, was born and educated in Hamilton, Ohio. After completing medical school training at the University of Cincinnati, she did not hesitate to begin her formative career in Hamilton and Fairfield, Ohio. A loving mother and doting grandmother, Dr. Paula has provided care to thousands of patients with cancer and blood disorders at OHC’s Fairfield and Hamilton offices.
OHC patient, Pearl Lewis, holds Dr. Paula in high regard. In addition to personally receiving care from Dr. Paula, Pearl’s late husband and sister-in-law were also Dr. Paula patients. “She’s a marvelous person and has had so much concern for each patient,” said Pearl. “I admire her as a woman to be able to do what she does. She tenderly pushes forward. I hope she relaxes in retirement.”
On December 15th, family members, OHC staff, and colleagues gathered at a retirement party to celebrate Dr. Paula, share memories, and offer well wishes. “Dr. Paula has been an incredible role model for me,” said OHC medical oncologist and hematologist and dear friend of Dr. Paula’s, Cynthia C. Chua, MD. “She is somebody who has been such strength for everyone—community, other physicians, and her patients. I will miss her a lot.”
Highlighting the evening was a message to Dr. Paula from Pat Moeller, Mayor of Hamilton. In addition to recognizing Dr. Paula’s remarkable career and thanking her for her selfless dedication to the citizens of Hamilton, Mayor Moeller presented her with a formal proclamation and officially named December 15 “Dr. Paula Weisenberger Day” in Hamilton. Dr. Paula, who was surprised and touched by the thoughtful gestures, said, “I first want to thank all of my colleagues who always answered a question or a call and offered assistance when needed. I will truly miss every single one of you, and of course, all of my patients.”
Known not only for her tremendous expertise and compassion, Dr. Paula has a reputation for great style. While she will be hanging up her suits and putting away the pearls, we are confident that she will continue her shopping excursions, perhaps more so for “The Triplets,” her endearing granddaughters.
During retirement Dr. Paula plans to spend more time with family while catching up on reading and traveling. We are confident she will not be a stranger to OHC. In addition to benefitting from her expert consultation, we look forward to sharing continued companionship. It’s not “Farewell,” it’s “See you soon,” Dr. Paula!
