Doctors at OHC use intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), an advanced mode of high-precision radiotherapy that uses linear accelerators to safely and painlessly deliver precise radiation doses to a tumor while minimizing the dose to surrounding healthy tissue. IMRT conforms the radiation dose more precisely to the three-dimensional (3-D) shape of the tumor by controlling (modulating) the intensity of the radiation beam in multiple small volumes.
At the beginning of the treatment session, your OHC radiation therapist will position you on the treatment table, guided by the marks placed on your skin that define the treatment area. Treatment sessions usually take about 15 minutes.
If your OHC doctor orders IMRT as part of your treatment, he or she will take time to explain in detail how it will be used in your care plan. For more information about IMRT, call us at 1-800-710-4674.
