OHC Doctors: David M. Waterhouse, MD, MPH

David M. Waterhouse, MD, MPH, is a medical oncologist and hematologist whose specialties include lung cancer and urologic cancer. Dr. Waterhouse is passionate about cancer research and the impact it has on patients. This is evidenced by his extensive commitments: Chair of ASCO State of Oncology Care in America (SOCCA) Committee, Director of OHC’s Early Phase Clinical Trials, and as principal investigator of phase one trials. His intense drive and passion have been recognized by ASCO as the winner of the Clinical Trials Participation Award, the Young Investigator Award from the Conquer Cancer Foundation of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and as an international lecturer on immunotherapy drugs. He is also the recipient of the Unsung Hero Award from Cancer Family Care and the Healthcare Hero Innovator Award from the Cincinnati Business Courier.

The most important part of Dr. Waterhouse’s career is the care of his patients. “After losing my father to cancer during my medical residency, I was fairly convinced that I wanted nothing to do with cancer care. But two years later, I did a rotation with a compassionate, inspired oncologist who introduced me to a very different side of cancer care. I entered my fellowship a year later. Each day, I get to help another patient beat the enemy known as cancer, and I won’t stop until every patient wins that battle. I always say that my goal is to be unemployed because we have discovered a cure for cancer, and I believe we’re getting closer each day.”

What most patients and their families remember about Dr. Waterhouse is his wide smile, his love for Michigan football, and the hope and kindness he bestows upon them. When Dr. Waterhouse does have free time, he enjoys reading, ice hockey, and dog shows.
