OHC is the only group of cancer doctors that offers Gamma Knife for radiation therapy in Greater Cincinnati.
“This is significant because patients who have conditions that prevent them from wearing the frame can now receive this highly precise treatment,” says Elizabeth H. Levick, MD, radiation oncologist with OHC. “This includes patients with head, neck and spinal injuries.”
In the past, surgeons would remove most of a tumor, but not all because that could involve removing or affecting a small part of the brain. Gamma Knife allows doctors to deliver radiation to a brain tumor to destroy the tumor cells while causing little or no radiation damage to the surrounding normal tissue. Now the “frameless” option is the next step with this remarkable technology.
“Gamma Knife is a game-changer,” added Dr. Levick. “There was a time when patients with brain tumors had no hope. Now we are changing lives and actually curing them of brain cancer. And with the frameless option, we can offer this technology to even more patients.”
